About Us
History
BC Rivers Day is a province-wide
event, held every year on the last
Sunday in September (Sept 23rd for 2012 in Prince George). Established
in 1980 and coordinated by the
Outdoor Recreation Council (ORC),
it has been proclaimed by communities
across BC and attracts over 75,000
people to more than 100 events each
year. The success of this event in BC has
also recently led to the establishment of a "National Rivers Day" -
and as part of the UN Water for Life Decade starting in 2005, a new "
World Rivers Day" will be celebrated each September. This will use BC
Rivers Day as a model and concurrent river-related events will take
place in a number of different countries.
Our Purpose
The purpose of BC Rivers Day - Prince George is to provide Prince George citizens the opportunity to celebrate their river heritage by organizing an annual BC Rivers Day event. BC Rivers Day is a chance to celebrate the province’s rivers, and specifically Prince George’s two major rivers, the Fraser and the Nechako.
The Prince George Rivers Day Committee encourages residents to experience British Columbia’s spectacular river heritage, and brings attention to the need for sound river management by
- functioning as a liaison between all levels of government, businesses and community organizations to promote the importance of local waterways and the environment and
- increasing public awareness about waterway and environmental stewardship and their ecological, social and economic values.
